Late August is my favorite kind of quiet. Nothing is settled, everybody is lying a little about their depth chart, and the useful NFL betting news today comes in small pieces that only matter in about three weeks. That is the window I like. If he is a field-stretcher on a snap count, it is noise. If he is playing real slot volume when it counts, the receiving markets will be slow to notice a guy who just changed teams twice.
  1. Jarquez Hunter to the Dolphins backfield. This is the half of the trade nobody will write about, which is usually the half worth reading. Miami adding a young back tells me they are not thrilled with their touch distribution. What turns it into a play: a clean lead-back split showing up on the field. Committee backfields are where good handicapping goes to die, and I will sit on my hands until the split is real.
  1. Jonnu Smith to Green Bay on a one-year deal. Word came down that the Packers are adding him for a season. A yards-after-catch tight end in an offense that likes throwing to tight ends is not a subtle fit. What turns it into a play: seeing him used as the move guy rather than the third man in a rotation.
  1. Seattle pays Leonard Williams: three years, $90 million. That is one of the biggest interior defensive tackle numbers in the league, and it is a continuity buy, not a splash. Teams that keep their interior front intact tend to keep run defense stable. What turns it into a play: nothing yet. It is a season-long input, not a Thursday one.

And a fifth thing that is not a spot, just a mood: the watchability rankings had the Raiders low despite Maxx Crosby and Kirk Cousins, the Bills low despite Josh Allen, and Dallas pleasantly high. Entertainment value and football value are different currencies. Always have been.

The one I lean on

Green Bay's tight end room. A one-year deal for a proven yards-after-catch player is a team telling you it has a job that needs doing. Lean, not a play. Nothing on my board cleared a number today, and I am not going to manufacture one out of a transaction wire.
