Late August is the quietest loud month in football. Nothing counts yet, everything matters, and the NFL betting news today is mostly housekeeping that will show up on a scoreboard in about three weeks. My board has no qualifying picks on it right now, and I'd rather tell you that up front than dress up a hunch in a suit.

So this is the radar, not the ledger. Five things I'm chewing on, and what each one would have to do to become an actual play.

What I'm eyeing in the NFL right now

  1. Lamar Jackson's legs. He said the quiet part plainly: injuries in 2025 pushed him to the fewest rushing attempts of his eight-year career. That's not a decline story, that's a health story, and those two get priced identically by a lazy market. What turns it into a play: clean designed-run usage out of Baltimore's camp work and a rushing number that still reflects last year's suppressed volume.
  1. Atlanta's quarterback room. Penix is out of the preseason finale, Tua gets the start in it, and the staff says no Week 1 decision has been made. I don't fully buy "undecided" this late in August, but I do buy that Atlanta wants the other 31 buildings guessing. What turns it into a play: a named starter, then watching whether anything overcorrects on the news.
  1. Houston's right tackle. Braden Smith and Ali Gaye were carted off a joint practice with Carolina. I hope both are fine, full stop. From a football standpoint, a starting right tackle is one of the handful of non-quarterback positions that genuinely moves a team's efficiency. What turns it into a play: a real timeline, not a shrug.
  1. Five fouls with teeth. Starting this season, the league and the players agreed to concentrate discipline on the on-field violations most likely to injure people. Good policy. It is also a flag-rate variable, and flag rate is a total variable. What turns it into a play: two or three weeks of early-season penalty data telling me officials are calling it tighter than the numbers assume.
  1. The college door closing. Word came down that any player who returns to the college ranks can't sign with an NFL team this season. Thin-roster teams just lost an emergency valve. Depth chart stuff, but depth is how Novembers get decided.

The one I lean on most

Lamar. A lean, not a play. When a quarterback tells you his volume dropped because his body wouldn't let him run and the projections treat that as a new baseline, that's a tell. My number wants more carries than last season's line of thinking implies. I need the actual posted number in front of me before I do anything about it, and I'll say so here when it gets there.

One more, off the board entirely: the league and the association are launching a Behavioral Health Network on Sept. 1 for confidential mental health access. No angle, no read. Just good, and worth saying out loud.
