College football Week 0 2026 arrives the way it usually does, which is small, scattered, and about four thousand miles from most of the people who care about it. Eight games on the slate. The one everybody circled is North Carolina and TCU in Dublin, Ireland, an FBS season opener staged for an audience that will mostly be watching it in the dark on the other side of the ocean.
I love this weekend and I have never once pretended it is a real football weekend. Week 0 is a soft launch. Fewer marquee programs, thinner rosters of proven players, coaching staffs running things in live conditions for the first time. That is the actual value here: it is a testing ground. New quarterbacks, rebuilt offensive lines, first-year staffs finding out whether the thing they installed in August survives contact with a stranger. You learn more from a sloppy Week 0 than from a Week 3 blowout, because sloppy is information.
checked the almanac: Ireland is not a gimmick anymore, not really. Notre Dame and Navy played at Croke Park in 1996 and came back to Aviva Stadium in 2012, and Dublin has kept getting kickoff weekends ever since. A one-off became a tradition the slow way, which is the only way traditions ever happen.
The quieter story in all this is the money and the calendar it buys. The Big Ten's television contract is now at its halfway point, and the reporting says that is pushing real investment into Friday night broadcasts and more frequent ranked-versus-ranked scheduling. Friday used to belong to high school football and nobody argued about it. That fight is over and it did not go the way the purists wanted.
The other shift is where you find the games at all. There are guides everywhere now walking fans through free and paid streaming options for the 2026-27 season, which tells you the transition is basically done. Cable is no longer the default. It is one option among six.
What I am watching next: whether those Friday ranked matchups actually deliver marquee football or just marquee branding, and how the coaching carousel sets up after last cycle's unprecedented churn. Somebody is already on a list they do not know about.
