Football is back tonight, the Patriots are in Seattle at 8:20 ET, and I have been circling Wednesday on the calendar like a kid circling a birthday. So let me be honest about NFL best bets today before we go a word further: nothing has cleared my board. Not one thing. Week 1 is the least honest week of the season, everybody's numbers are built on projection instead of evidence, and I would rather show up with four live questions than one manufactured answer.

Here's what's actually on the radar.

NFL best bets today: the four spots I'm tracking

  1. Miami at Las Vegas, Sunday 4:25 ET. The reporting says Brock Bowers had a meniscus trim Tuesday in Dallas and is expected to miss a game or two. That is the Raiders' best target earner, their red zone answer, and the guy who bends a defense's whole plan. What turns it into a play: he lands on the inactive list for real, and the number still looks like he's suiting up.
  2. Green Bay at Minnesota, Sunday 4:25 ET. Minnesota came out Wednesday and said Kyler Murray starts, Carson Wentz is the No. 2, and J.J. McCarthy opens as the third quarterback. Third. You don't bury a young arm at No. 3 in September by accident, and a QB room ordered like that tells you exactly how much the staff wants stability. That's a tell. What turns it into a play: seeing how Murray's mobility actually fits what they run, and a total that hasn't already made up its mind.
  3. Cleveland at Jacksonville, Sunday 1:00 ET. Deshaun Watson is set for his first regular-season start since October 2024 and says he has a chance to showcase that he can still play in this league. I respect the sentence. I also have no idea what the distribution of outcomes looks like after that long away, and neither does anybody pricing it. What turns it into a play: an in-game read once I've seen real snaps, not a Wednesday guess.
  4. Chicago at Carolina, Sunday 1:00 ET. David Tepper said Wednesday he's a "believer" in Bryce Young. Owner vote of confidence in September is one of the least predictive statements in all of sport, right there with "we love our depth." What turns it into a play: none of this. I want to see what Carolina looks like on the field first.

The one I lean on most

The Bowers spot. A lean, not a play, and I want that heard clearly. When a team loses a tight end who wins his matchup on every down, the effect shows up in the ugly places: third down conversion, red zone efficiency, how often the offense has to ask somebody else to be brave. My number has that offense meaningfully quieter without him. If the market treats the news as a footnote instead of a subtraction, I'll be interested in the other side. If it has already made the full adjustment, the math says pass and I'll say so out loud.

Also, a non-betting beat because I liked it: Buffalo is bringing in a Toronto band to sing the Canadian anthem at its home opener against Detroit. Checked the almanac, the Bills played actual regular-season home games in Toronto for a stretch around 2008 to 2013, so that fanbase is not a marketing idea. It's earned.

What I'm watching next: the Friday and Saturday injury designations out of Las Vegas and Minnesota. Those two reports decide whether any of this becomes a play or stays a paragraph. Small edges over and over, no heroics, and this is entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where legal. You know where to find me.
