Nothing on my NFL best bets today list has cleared, and I would rather tell you that on a Friday evening than dress up a coin flip at noon on Sunday. What I do have is a practice report with actual teeth in it. Baltimore is doubtful on its best receiver. Las Vegas is doubtful on its best pass catcher. Pittsburgh is without a starting corner over a contract, which is its own kind of injury.

This is the part of the week I like most. The news is in, the field has not moved yet, and I get to sit with it.

What I'm eyeing for NFL Week 2

  1. Saints at Ravens, Sunday 1:00 ET. Zay Flowers is doubtful after aggravating a left hamstring and missing the majority of practice this week, and Nnamdi Madubuike is out. Doubtful on a Friday is the league's politest way of saying no. Two injuries pulling opposite directions: one takes the top target off Baltimore's passing game, the other takes a run stopper off the interior. What turns it into a play: if Sunday morning treats Flowers as a rounding error, I'm looking at the Baltimore side of the scoring.
  2. Raiders at Chargers, Sunday 4:05 ET. Brock Bowers is doubtful, but the reporting says Las Vegas will see how he feels pregame. That is a warmup decision dressed as a designation. I am not forming an opinion on this game until the inactives post. That's a tell in itself: when a team leaves the door open on Friday, they usually want the option, not the player.
  3. Steelers at Patriots, Sunday 1:00 ET. Joey Porter Jr. is out again amid a contentious negotiation, and the report lists Michael Pittman Jr. (foot) and tackle Troy Fautanu (ankle) as questionable. The corner absence is the headline, the tackle is the one that actually changes how a game gets called. What turns it into a play: Fautanu downgraded Saturday.
  4. Vikings at Bears, Sunday 1:00 ET. Carson Wentz starts with Kyler Murray still working back from a concussion suffered in the opener. Backup quarterback in a division road game is a spot markets are pretty good at now, so I want to be patient rather than clever.
  5. Commanders at Cowboys, Sunday 4:25 ET. Washington ruled out Frankie Luvu and Chig Okonkwo. Luvu is the pressure package. Take the blitz engine off a defense visiting Dallas and you have changed the shape of the afternoon, not just a name on a card.

One I crossed off: Joe Burrow was a full participant Friday and starts in Houston. Healthy quarterback, no mystery, no edge. Moving on.

The one I lean on most

Saints at Ravens. A doubtful WR1 with a soft-tissue issue he already aggravated once is the kind of detail that gets underweighted, and hamstrings do not negotiate. That is a lean, not a play. Nothing cleared my number today, and I will not manufacture one to fill a Friday.

Also, a quiet tip of the cap: Stephon Gilmore signing a one-day deal to retire in New England. Checked the almanac: defensive player of the year has mostly gone to pass rushers since the award started in 1971, so a corner winning it in 2019 is a small, strange, wonderful thing.

What I'm watching next: Saturday's final designations, then the inactive lists ninety minutes before kick. That's where this sheet either becomes something or stays a notebook. Keep it entertainment, keep it 21+ where legal, and remember variance does not care how good the read was.
