Thursday in late September is the best mood of the football week. Two weeks of results, not enough to be sure of anything, one primetime game to chew on and three days to sit with the Sunday board. So here is what I'm eyeing for NFL best bets today, with the honest label attached to each one: radar, not play.
One thing cleared my number this morning. Exactly one. The rest is homework.
NFL best bets today: the eyeing list
- Jahan Dotson under 1.5 receptions, Falcons at Packers, 8:15 ET. Offered at 122 against a fair price of 103 on my sheet, which is a hair over nine points of edge. Thin target trees in Green Bay's receiver room do this: the second and third options live or die on two or three looks, and the market prices the name instead of the usage. This one already clears. The thing that kills it is a blowout script where garbage time hands out free catches.
- Chris Brooks under 1.5 receptions, same game. Offered at -175, my fair sits at -200, call it a shade under five percent. Real, but you are laying a heavy price for a small gap and one screen pass ruins your night. I want a better number before I treat it as anything more than a name on the pad.
- Chargers at Bills, Sunday 1:00 ET. Buffalo opened with wins over Houston and Detroit while scoring at one of the highest rates in the league, and the national conversation has moved to calling them a wagon. That is usually when the number starts paying for the narrative instead of the team. I'm watching whether the price treats this like a coronation. If it does, I'm looking at the other side, not the wagon.
- Kenneth Walker III's workload, Chiefs at Dolphins. Andy Reid said out loud this week that one of his objectives is to cut Walker's load "a little bit." A head coach telling you the plan three days early is a tell. It points at rushing props before it points at a side, and what turns it into a play is a number that hasn't accounted for the split yet.
- Joey Porter Jr., Bengals at Steelers. Word from Pittsburgh is he's definitely playing this season, exact date to be determined. Until he's officially back on the field, the Steelers secondary is a different unit than the one on the preseason depth chart, and that matters more to Cincinnati's passing numbers than to the side.
| Spot | Offered | My fair | Edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dotson under 1.5 rec | 122 | 103 | 9.25% |
| Brooks under 1.5 rec | -175 | -200 | 4.76% |
The one I lean on
The Dotson under. It's a lean, not a play, and the difference is that I haven't watched Green Bay's inactives yet. Small edges over and over, no heroics, is how the season actually gets won, and a nine percent gap on a single-catch prop is exactly that shape. Mind the gap like it owes you money, but don't mistake nine percent for a certainty. It isn't one.
checked the almanac: green bay won the ice bowl at lambeau on december 31, 1967, 21 to 17, on a quarterback sneak with thirteen seconds left. different weather tonight.
What I'm watching next: the Chiefs backfield split in Miami, and whether the Bills price starts charging admission for two wins. 21 and up where it's legal, this is entertainment with variance attached, and if it ever stops feeling like entertainment, 1-800-GAMBLER. You know where to find me.
