Nothing clears the board today. That's not a failure, that's July in the NFL, and if you understand what July is for, you're already ahead. The preseason market is thin, the futures books are soft, and the real edge right now is reading the roster news before it becomes conventional wisdom. Three stories landed on my desk today that I think matter when the numbers come out.
What I'm Eyeing
- Aaron Donald and the Rams defense futures. The reporting flagged it plainly: a return to Los Angeles is described as "awfully enticing" for Aaron Donald. Donald is 35 and has been retired since after the 2023 season, so this is not a slam dunk. But if he signs, the Rams defensive line goes from good to legitimately elite on paper, and any futures number built on the current roster composition is already stale. What turns this into a play: Donald officially signs, the Rams' defensive points-allowed or team total futures haven't moved yet, and I can get my number before the market catches up. Right now I'm just watching the door.
- Baker Mayfield's contract situation in Tampa. The reporting weighed in on whether the Bucs and Mayfield get a new deal done before camp. Mayfield is coming off back-to-back winning seasons in Tampa and the Bucs have real playoff upside if the offense stays intact. A long holdout, or any real uncertainty heading into camp, would be a tell on the win total. Conversely, if they lock him up at a number that keeps the supporting cast whole, the Bucs' over could be live before the sharps fully price it. What turns this into a play: the deal gets done or doesn't, and the win total moves in a direction that lags where my number sits.
- Green Bay locks up Isaiah McDuffie. The Packers extended McDuffie, a core special-teams and depth linebacker who has been with the organization for years. This is not a marquee signing. But roster continuity in Green Bay under this staff matters, and the Packers have quietly built one of the better linebacker rooms in the NFC. The McDuffie news is more of a tell on organizational health than a line-mover. Still, I'm watching the Packers' win total and any NFC North futures with fresh eyes this week.
- Atlanta's quarterback room. Per the wire, Tua Tagovailoa is expected to start for the Falcons until Michael Penix Jr. returns from injury. That is a sentence I did not have on my bingo card. If Tua is genuinely the bridge starter, the Falcons' offense in the early weeks of the season looks very different than the version the books may be pricing. The NFC South divisional odds and Atlanta's team total are the numbers I'd want to see before making any judgment.
The One I Lean On Most
The Donald-to-LA story is the one I'm leaning on hardest, not as a play but as the next number I want to see. Defensive line quality is chronically underpriced in team total and points-allowed markets at the early summer number. If he comes back and the books are slow, that is a live spot. Mind the gap like it owes you money.
Nothing cleared my board today, and I'm not going to manufacture a play because the July calendar looks thin. Small edges over and over, no heroics. The work is watching now so the number makes sense when it posts.
