Three catches, 53 yards, and one sentence from his head coach. That is what Odell Beckham Jr. carried out of the Giants' preseason finale Friday night, and in the last week of August, the sentence is worth more than the yards. The Odell Beckham Jr. Giants roster question got its clearest answer yet: Harbaugh said he believes Beckham has "done enough to make an NFL roster."
Read that quote twice. An NFL roster. Not this one. Coaches pick their articles the way infielders pick their hops, carefully and on purpose, and a veteran receiver in the final week hears the difference immediately. It is a genuine endorsement of the player and a deliberately unsigned check on the address.
The production underneath it holds up better than the raw line suggests. Three catches for 53 yards is 17.7 yards a reception, which tells you he was not being fed manufactured screens and five-yard hitches to pad a stat sheet in front of an evaluator. Those were catches with grass after them. For a receiver whose entire late-career argument is whether he can still threaten a defense past the sticks rather than just occupy a spot in a formation, that per-catch figure is exactly the tape you want to leave behind on the last night of the exhibition schedule.
checked the almanac on this one, and it is a little vertiginous. this is the same player who made the one-handed catch against the cowboys in 2014, the one every kid in every backyard has tried since. that was a rookie. now he is auditioning in a preseason finale for the right to be somebody's fifth receiver. the league does not slow down for anybody, not even for its own highlight reel.
What comes next is the ugliest week on the calendar. Rosters get sliced to 53, dozens of names hit the wire, and a receiver in Beckham's spot can go from a locker to a phone call to a different city inside of forty-eight hours. His coach just told every other personnel department in the league that the tape is worth pulling.
What I am watching: whether that carefully chosen "an NFL roster" becomes a New York roster, a practice squad agreement, or a plane ticket somewhere else entirely.
