The list of NFL players to watch next offseason opens with C.J. Stroud, and that alone tells you where the league's calendar is sitting. Eleven names, all up for extensions, all with a real path to wearing something else in 2027. It reads like a preview. It's actually a deadline.
Start with the quarterback, because the league always does. Stroud went second overall in 2023, which means Houston is standing exactly where every team with a young starter eventually stands: a rookie deal running out, a fifth-year option sitting there like a snooze button, and the choice between paying a number you can still help shape or waiting until the market writes it for you. Quarterbacks have never once gotten cheaper while a front office thought it over.
The cornerbacks are the more interesting part of the list to me. Corner is the position teams talk themselves out of paying, every single time, because the film shows a few bad Sundays and somebody in the building says the words "we can replace that." Then they spend a season learning what a real one was worth. If the class of extension candidates is heavy at corner, next spring is going to be loud.
And the turnover is faster than fans want to believe. Cleveland is out here preparing a defense to be built without Myles Garrett, with a new coordinator, returning pieces, and the reporting has Jared Verse in the middle of it. Minnesota just added Kyle Van Noy at 35, a 13-year veteran with 57 career sacks, because depth on the edge is the one thing nobody has enough of. Every one of those moves traces back to somebody's contract math a year or two earlier.

I don't have the full eleven names in front of me yet, and I'm not going to guess at the back half of a list. What I'm watching is which clubs move early. The ones who extend before the option year are telling you they're certain. The ones who wait are telling you something too.
