Angel Reese grabbed 26 rebounds Monday night, the most any player has ever pulled down in a WNBA game, and she broke the league's single season rebounding record in the same 40 minutes. Atlanta beat Los Angeles 78-71. Two records, one night, one uniform.

Start with the number itself, because the Angel Reese rebounding record is not the kind of thing that creeps up on a league. Twenty six in a single game. That is a full quarter of a possession war won by one player who simply decided the ball was hers. Rebounding records do not fall to luck or a hot shooting night. They fall to the same player boxing out the same way on the 60th possession that she did on the sixth, which is the least glamorous skill in basketball and the hardest one to fake.

The context is what makes it land. Reese arrived in this league in 2024 and immediately rewrote the season rebounding mark that had belonged to Sylvia Fowles, and everybody who watched it happen said some version of the same thing: rookies do not do that. Now she has done it again, in an Atlanta jersey, and pushed the ceiling up rather than defending it. That is a different kind of career. Plenty of players have one historic season. Very few come back and beat the version of themselves that made history.

For the Sparks it was a hard way to lose a close one, seven points down with the interior surrendered. For Atlanta it is the kind of win a locker room keeps. Reese has become the rare player whose statistical identity is also the team's identity: possessions extended, second chances created, opponents worn down.

What I am watching next is whether she keeps stacking on the season number the rest of the way, because a record broken in August is a record that can be pushed to somewhere nobody reaches for a decade.
