The WNBA 2026 season awards conversation has narrowed to a two-name headline, A'ja Wilson and Angel Reese, and the year-in-review work landing this morning puts both of them at the top of the pile. That pairing is the whole season in miniature. The established force who has been collecting hardware for years, and the one who kicked the door in and refused to leave.
Wilson being there is not news. Wilson being there is closer to gravity. Reese is the more interesting entry, because dominance from a player still early in her career tends to arrive in one loud category before it arrives in all of them, and the reason her name keeps showing up on these lists is volume: she gets to the glass, she stays on the floor, and she produces every night rather than in bursts. That is the boring, unglamorous, extremely hard version of stardom. She plays again today, Chicago at New York, 1:00 PM ET.
And the timing on all of this is a little funny, because the loudest thing that happened in the league this week was not on any ballot. Indiana ran Connecticut out of the building 111-91, with Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell each finishing with 34 points. Sixty-eight combined from a backcourt, matching totals, in a twenty-point win. You do not see that symmetry often. Whatever the awards lists decided, the Fever spent Friday night making a separate argument.
One harder note underneath the good year. The reporting around the league says WNBA writers are stepping back from the beat, some of them taking hiatuses, because of sustained online harassment. Growth brought money, ratings, and a much bigger audience. It also brought that. The people who cover this league deserve better than what the replies have been handing them, and the league is big enough now that it is a real problem rather than a small one.
checked the almanac: this league tipped off in 1997 with eight teams. The 2026 awards argument alone runs deeper than that entire original season did.
What I am watching next: Chicago at New York at 1:00 PM ET, then Minnesota at Atlanta on Sunday afternoon.
