Friday in September has a particular smell to it. Fourteen games, a first-pitch stack that runs from dinner to almost midnight, and the kind of lineup churn that makes a Tuesday number look like a museum piece. So before I talk myself into anything, here is the honest state of my MLB best bets today: one fat prop number, four dog prices with thin-but-real edges, and a Wrigley storyline I have no number on yet.
This is the radar, not the ledger. Nothing here is a play until the price and the card agree with each other.
MLB best bets today: what's actually on my radar
- Colt Keith Under 0.5 Hits, Rockies at Detroit (6:41 ET). Offered at +154, my desk has it closer to +139. That is the biggest gap on the board by a mile and the only one I'd call chunky. What turns it into a play: a lineup card. Batter hit props live and die on where a guy hits and who is actually starting, and I am not paying a price for a name that might get a day off.
- Rangers moneyline at Arizona (9:41 ET). Plus 116 offered against a fair number nearer plus 118. Small. Real. Late West spot, the kind of game the market builds last and prices laziest.
- Guardians moneyline at Minnesota (8:11 ET). Minus 116 on a fair minus 113. That is under a point of edge, which is another way of saying it is a lean that a half-point of juice erases. Needs minus 110 or better to become a conversation.
- Astros plus 150 at Tampa and Phillies plus 160 at Atlanta. Both dogs, both a few cents better than my fair, both under a percent. Dog money in September is where variance lives. I'd take these at longer, not at even.
- Pirates at Cubs, Saturday 2:21 ET at Wrigley. No number from me yet. The reporting says the Pirates got Ryan O'Hearn back off the injured list before the Friday date, and Counsell said Dansby Swanson is hoping to come off the IL sometime next week, which means next week, not this one. A shortstop-shaped hole in a contender's lineup and an afternoon wind at Wrigley is exactly the pairing I want to price myself before the board settles.
| Spot | Offered | My fair | Edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colt Keith U0.5 Hits | +154 | +139 | 6.40% |
| Rangers ML | +116 | +118 | 1.29% |
| Guardians ML | -116 | -113 | 0.76% |
| Astros ML | +150 | +155 | 0.58% |
| Phillies ML | +160 | +164 | 0.35% |
The one I'm leaning on
The Rangers at plus 116. Not the biggest number, and I want to be straight about why: the Keith under is the fatter edge, but it hinges on information I don't have in hand yet, and a prop that vanishes when a manager writes a different name is a coin I can't weigh. The Rangers price is a full nine innings, de-vigged, and it holds up if I lose the lineup lottery. Small edges over and over, no heroics.
That's a lean, not a play. If the Keith number survives the card, it jumps the line and I'll say so.
What I'm watching next: the Wrigley wind report for that Saturday afternoon game, and whether the late desert number drifts toward plus 120 while everybody is watching the Mets and Yankees.
Keep it entertainment, keep it 21-plus where it's legal, and keep the size where it belongs, which is your call and not mine.
