The whole wire today is real estate. Salt Lake City getting called the front-runner, Portland pushing its case through a former Nike exec, national voices talking rooms and votes and organ music. Genuinely fun baseball story. Absolutely no help for MLB best bets today, because expansion doesn't pitch the seventh inning.
So I went to my own numbers instead. Fifteen games, and the day came back quiet in a way I've learned to respect. Four spots worth typing out. None of them heroic.
checked the almanac: the last time this league actually expanded was 1998, the Diamondbacks and the Devil Rays. Both of those franchises are on tonight's schedule. Twenty-eight years later and nobody thinks of them as new anymore. that's the part these expansion arguments always forget.
MLB best bets today: the four spots on my radar
- Arizona at Kansas City, under 9. Offered at even money, my fair number says it should cost you about a dime, so the gap is roughly five and a half points of EV. Kauffman's outfield is a big empty country and nines in that park have to be earned. What turns it into a play: wind. If it's blowing out toward left when the gates open, my number moves and I move with it.
- Colt Keith under 0.5 hits, Minnesota at Detroit. Fattest edge on the board at plus 135 against a fair 115, call it nine and a half points. Plus money on a hitless afternoon buys forgiveness for a lot of misses. What turns it into a play: seeing him actually posted in the lineup where my number expects him, no surprise shuffle up the card.
- Leody Taveras under 0.5 hits, Cleveland at Baltimore. Plus 102 on something my number prices at minus 113. Seven points. Same story, same requirement: I need the lineup card, and I don't have it in front of me yet.
- Agustin Ramirez under 0.5 hits, Mets at Miami. Plus 134 versus a fair 120, about six and a half points. Smallest of the three prop edges and the one I'd let go first.
| Spot | Offered | My fair | Edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keith U0.5 hits (MIN/DET) | +135 | +115 | 9.5% |
| Taveras U0.5 hits (CLE/BAL) | +102 | -113 | 7.3% |
| Ramirez U0.5 hits (NYM/MIA) | +134 | +120 | 6.5% |
| Under 9 (ARI/KC) | +100 | -112 | 5.6% |
Nothing deleted, nothing cherry-picked. That's the whole board, and it's small edges over and over, no fireworks.
The one I lean on
The under 9 in Kansas City, and it isn't because it's the biggest number. It's the least binary. A full-game total gets nine innings to be right. A single-hitter prop gets three or four trips, and one seeing-eye grounder through the four hole ends the conversation before you've finished your first beer. Getting plus money on a side I price at minus 112 is exactly the kind of soft line I'll sit on and wait for, so mind the gap like it owes you money.
A lean, not a play. Nothing has cleared yet because three of these four live or die on a lineup card that isn't out. If Keith gets posted where I expect him, that plus 135 becomes the best thing on my day.
What I'm watching next: KC wind readings and the lineups in Detroit, Baltimore and Miami. Keep it entertainment, keep it 21-plus where it's legal, and remember variance doesn't care how good the number was. You know where to find me.
