So my MLB best bets today list is short on purpose, because the actual board is Tuesday: thirteen games, real rotations, and a couple of spots that got more interesting while everybody was watching the early window.

The mechanism: Minnesota reinstated Joe Ryan off the IL to start Monday afternoon, so their best available arm is spent for the series opener and off the board Tuesday. What turns it into a play: confirmed starters holding and that plus 182 not bleeding down toward my fair number.
  2. Cardinals at Giants, Tuesday (9:46 ET). The reporting has Cards rookie Mathews lined up well for Oracle Park, and Oracle is the most honest ballpark in the league about who can and cannot hit a fly ball. What turns it: a total that has not already baked in the marine layer. If the number opens where the park says it should, there is nothing to do. If it opens two ticks high, that is a live spot.
  3. Astros at Phillies, Tuesday (6:41 ET). Jesus Luzardo threw the first shutout of his career Monday, 12 strikeouts, two hits, 1-0 over Atlanta, in start number 150. Do you know what a complete game does to a bullpen? Absolutely nothing. Philadelphia's pen threw zero pitches. That freshness is a tell for a tight middle-innings game against Houston, and it is exactly the kind of edge the market forgets by the next morning.
  4. Cubs at Brewers, Tuesday (7:41 ET). Milwaukee put Grant Anderson on the 15-day IL with biceps inflammation and recalled Brandon Sproat. One arm out of a good bullpen is not a crisis. It is a thinner ladder to the ninth in a division game. What turns it: a total that has not moved on the news.
  5. Blue Jays postseason futures. The bold-prediction crowd is beating the comeback drum, and Toronto has games in Oakland now and Tuesday night. I do not have a futures price in front of me, so I have an opinion and no number. Opinions do not cash.

The one I lean on

Detroit's run line. Lean, not a play. Plus 182 against a fair 166 is a real gap and I intend to mind it like it owes me money, but I want Tuesday's starters confirmed before I do anything but stare at it. Small edges over and over, no heroics. That is the whole picture.
