The biggest piece of MLB line movement today is not a side, it is a total: Seattle at Boston opened 8.5 and by 6:30 this morning the under was posted at 7 and the over at 7.5. That is a run and a half of air gone out of a Fenway game before most of the country had coffee. When a number moves that far that early, something real is behind it. I don't have the cause confirmed in front of me yet, and I'm not going to guess at it for you.
What I can do is read the whole board, because the board is coherent, and coherence is the tell.

Look at the run lines. Both of them got longer. Seattle -1.5 from +155 out to +175, Boston -1.5 from +180 out to +190. Nobody prices both sides of a margin market further away unless they expect fewer total runs, and fewer runs means fewer two-run wins. That is not one shop shading a number. That is the whole market lowering its scoring expectation and paying the side prices out accordingly.
The side move is real too. Boston opened -138, sits at -117 de-vigged, and the prediction venues have the Red Sox in the 54 to 56 percent range against roughly 53.9 percent implied. So the money took Boston off the favorite pedestal without ever making Seattle the favorite. A 21-cent bleed with no side flip usually means people got new information about run creation, not about who wins.
What I'm doing about it: nothing yet. Chasing a total that has already moved a run and a half is how you end up buying the worst version of a good idea. A 7 is a real key number in baseball and it moved through 8 to get there, so the value that existed at open belongs to whoever was awake at open. Not me.
What I'm watching next is whether anybody posts 7 on the over side. Right now the books are split between 7 and 7.5, and the moment that gap closes, we'll know if the market thinks it went too far or not far enough. Bet the number, never the noise, and keep it entertainment money.
