Padres call up Ethan Salas after Luis Rengifo's torn ACL
San Diego had the busiest 24 hours of anyone. Second baseman Luis Rengifo, 29, was initially diagnosed with a knee sprain, and imaging revealed the full extent of it: a torn right ACL, season-ending surgery. That is a real subtraction from an infield in a September race, and it is a rough way for a player to have his year end.
The reporting also says the Padres are calling up catching prospect Ethan Salas, who would be the youngest player to appear at catcher since Ivan Rodriguez. San Diego is at Cincinnati at 6:41 ET.
checked the almanac: pudge rodriguez came up as a teenager for texas in 1991 and caught in the big leagues for 21 seasons. that is the last name on that particular list. good company to be measured against.
A young catcher in his first big league week is a live variable for a pitching staff, and I do not have his assignment for tonight in front of me yet. I want the lineup card before I have an opinion on the game.
Aaron Judge return date: Sept. 8 is the target
Judge, 34, traveled with the Yankees on this West Coast trip, and his manager said Monday night that the Sept. 8 homestand opener is "possible." Possible is doing a lot of lifting there. New York is at the Angels at 9:39 ET tonight without him, which means the lineup you are handicapping this week is not the lineup you will be handicapping next week. Price the roster in front of you.

Houston and Chicago was a series opener between American League division leaders, and the White Sox added two veteran bats on the same day, picking up Tommy Pham from Philadelphia and Jake Cave from Tampa Bay, both for cash. Depth moves, not needle-movers, but September roster churn is exactly where lineup assumptions go stale.
Elsewhere: Ketel Marte was back at the ballpark and in the D-backs lineup Monday, two weeks after his no-show in Boston, and he apologized to his manager and planned to address the team. Seattle at Boston at 6:46 ET is the game I keep circling back to, mostly because both of these teams have been priced off reputation more than form for a month. Nothing cleared my number this morning, so there are no plays on the sheet and I am not going to invent one to fill the space. Small edges over and over, no heroics, and some mornings the honest answer is that the math says pass.
Next number I am tracking: whether Judge's Sept. 8 target holds through this road trip, because that is the one piece of news this week that changes a lineup, not just a headline.
