What I'm Eyeing: MLB Picks Today

  1. Minnesota Twins @ Seattle Mariners (Fri, 10:11 PM ET). The Twins just took the series over Kansas City on a Kody Clemens walk-off grand slam, the kind of win that travels. They were no-hit through six by Noah Cameron and still found a way. That is a resilient club. I want to see the full pitching matchup confirmed and how the Twins' bullpen usage looks after a high-leverage ninth. If the starter matchup favors Minnesota and the number opens Minnesota +1.5 or better on the run line, this moves from interesting to something I'd price myself.
  1. Chicago White Sox @ Tampa Bay Rays (Fri, 7:11 PM ET). This is the McClanahan spot. He left Thursday's win over the Rangers in the fourth inning with back tightness and is listed day to day. The Rays won 3-2 on a Cedric Mullins homer and a seven-pitcher, two-hit performance, which is great bullpen work and also means the pen had a long night. If McClanahan is ruled out Friday, Tampa goes from a built-in pitching edge to a bullpen game on back-to-back days. Back tightness for a starter is never nothing. That's a tell. The number almost certainly moves the moment he's scratched, so the question is whether you can get ahead of the confirmation. What would turn this into a lean: McClanahan officially out, White Sox starter with decent recent form, and an opening number that hasn't fully adjusted yet.
  1. Kansas City Royals @ Colorado Rockies (Fri, 8:41 PM ET). Kansas City just gave up a walk-off grand slam to a guy named Kody Clemens on two strikes in the ninth. That is a brutal way to lose a series. I generally don't fade teams off one bad loss, but if the Royals are emotionally flat and the Rockies are at home in thin air with even a passable starter going, Coors Field has a way of making both of those things worse at once. I want the total here more than the side. If the number opens somewhere in the 10.5 to 11.5 range, I'm pricing the over myself before I touch either team.
  1. San Francisco Giants @ San Diego Padres (Thu, 9:41 PM ET). The Padres are reportedly on a streak worth tracking, and a divisional night game in Petco is exactly the kind of spot a streaking team at home feasts. I don't have a confirmed starter edge in front of me, so this is purely atmospheric right now. If the starting pitching picture sharpens and San Diego's number is still digestible, I'll revisit.

The One I Lean On Most

The McClanahan injury is the most actionable storyline on the board tonight. Not because the Rays can't win without him, they clearly can, seven arms just held Texas to two hits. But a bullpen game the day after a bullpen game against a team that plays in the same division and knows the Tampa relief corps cold is a different assignment than a healthy McClanahan start. The lean, not a play, is White Sox plus a run and a half if McClanahan is out and the number hasn't fully moved. Nothing clears until that roster status drops and I see the line.
