September baseball on a Saturday evening has a texture nothing else in the calendar matches. Contenders playing tight, eliminated clubs playing loose, and a board that quietly stops making sense because half the lineups are written in pencil. So here is the honest state of MLB best bets today from my desk: the sharpest things on my sheet are small props, not sides, and nothing has cleared into a play.

That is not me being coy. That is what the numbers gave me.

MLB best bets today: what's actually on my radar

  1. Jake Cronenworth under 0.5 hits, Padres at Giants. My board has this at +131 offered against a +113 fair, roughly an eight and a half percent edge. Cheap hit props are where books hold the least attention in September, and this one is sitting nearly twenty cents off my number. What turns it into a play: him actually being in the lineup card when it posts.
  2. Hunter Goodman under 0.5 hits, Rockies at Tigers. +130 against my +113 fair. Colorado bats away from altitude in a 12:11 ET start, which is a body-clock spot the market never fully prices. What turns it: confirmation he's in the batting order and not a late scratch.
  3. Jose Siri under 0.5 hits, Angels at Nationals. +126 versus +113 fair, the thinnest of the three and still a real gap. Same game, my Angels moneyline number reads +112 fair against +105 offered. Small. Barely a nudge.
  4. Astros in Tampa. Houston at +127 with my fair at +125. That is a coin flip with a hair on it, and a hair is not an edge. Two more cents and I'm interested.
  5. Royals at Red Sox, which is the pass. Boston offered at -215, my fair at -172. That is negative expectation of about five and a half percent, and I am not taking the other side just because the chalk is expensive. The math says pass. Nothing deleted, nothing cherry-picked.

The wire stuff that hasn't hit a number yet

Freddie Freeman is back in the Dodgers lineup after two games down with a right knee issue, and Los Angeles has Miami in front of them. A healthy Freeman is worth real cents to that side, but there's no Dodgers price on my sheet that's close enough to talk about. The Cubs reinstated Edward Cabrera and put him in the bullpen for now, which is a live arm added to a pen ahead of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, lost rookie outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez to the 10-day IL with a hamstring. Thin lineup, deeper pen on the other side. That's a tell worth tracking, not a number worth playing.

And in Atlanta, the word this morning was that Luzardo got scratched against the Braves. Late scratches are how totals get mispriced and also how bettors get run over. I'd rather watch that one.

The one I lean on most

Cronenworth under 0.5 hits. Best gap on the board, cleanest mechanism, and it's the kind of small edge you take over and over without ever needing a hero night. A lean, not a play, and it stays a lean until the lineup posts.

Baseball in September will humble you if you treat leans like locks. Keep it fun, keep it 21+ and within your own budget, and if it stops being entertainment, 1-800-GAMBLER is there.

Next number I'm tracking: whether that Astros price drifts past +129 before first pitch. You know where to find me.
