Kate Koval is a Baylor Lady Bear. The Ukrainian center signed with Baylor several weeks after leaving LSU, a departure that, according to the reporting, followed Tigers coach Kim Mulkey bringing a Russian player into the program.
That is the whole of it, and it is plenty. Players change schools every offseason now for minutes, for money, for a system that fits, for a coach who finally returns a text. This one is different in kind. Koval left a blue-blood roster over something happening seven thousand miles from any gym, in a country that is hers, and she did it knowing the next stop was not guaranteed to be anywhere near as good. That is not a transaction. That is a young woman deciding what she can live next to in a locker room, which is the one call nobody else on earth gets to make for her.
The finer points, timing, eligibility, what was said and when, have not come across my desk in full, and I am not going to fill those blanks with guesses. What is on the record is the move itself, and where it landed.
Which brings the almanac out, because the geography here is almost too neat. checked the almanac: kim mulkey built baylor into a national power, won it all in waco in 2005, 2012 and 2019, then left for lsu in 2021 and won a title in baton rouge two years later. koval just walked out of the house mulkey lives in now and into the one she built first. nobody scripts that.
Baylor gets a center, and centers are the hardest thing in women's college basketball to simply go find. Waco also gets a story its fan base will take personally, in the good way, because the whole town remembers exactly who built that program and what it took. For Koval, the job is smaller and harder than any of the noise around it: new staff, new terminology, new teammates, a new town, and a season that arrives whether or not she has settled. Ask anybody who has changed schools midstream. The basketball part is the easy part.
What I am watching next is the simplest thing on the list: her first game in a Baylor uniform, and how quickly that frontcourt looks like it belongs to her.
