The short version of NFL betting news today: a starting quarterback got ruled out of an opener, two front-seven starters came off the board in games that matter, and not one piece of it has cleared a number I would act on. That last part is the whole column.

Friday of Week 1 is my favorite information day on the calendar. Nobody has film, everybody has a take, and the injury report is the only honest document in the building. Practice news out of Atlanta, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Dallas all landed inside a couple of hours this afternoon. Here is what is on the radar, and what would have to happen for any of it to become more than radar.

What I'm eyeing for NFL Week 1

  1. Falcons at Steelers, Sunday 1:00 ET. Tua Tagovailoa is out with an oblique and Cooper Rush starts in Pittsburgh. Oblique injuries and throwing motions are not friends, so this feels like more than a one-week story. What would turn it into a play: a number that pays me for backup-quarterback variance instead of charging me for it, plus a read on whether Atlanta leans all the way into the run to protect him.
  1. Commanders at Eagles, Sunday 4:25 ET. Jonathan Greenard is out with a pec. He missed all of training camp and was limited in practice this week, and they still ruled him out. That's a tell. A guy who practices Friday and gets ruled out anyway is not two days from full. Philadelphia's edge rotation gets thinner in a divisional opener. What would turn it into a play: Washington's passing-game markets priced as if the Eagles' rush is whole.
  1. Ravens at Colts, Sunday 1:00 ET. Nnamdi Madubuike is out, with the Baltimore staff saying a return is "really close." Interior defensive line is exactly where Indianapolis wants to live. What would turn it into a play: a total that hasn't accounted for Baltimore being softer up the middle on early downs.
  1. Buccaneers at Bengals, Sunday 1:00 ET. Emeka Egbuka is a full go, Jalen McMillan is doubtful. That's target concentration in a building where points tend to happen. What would turn it into a play: confirmation on McMillan Sunday morning before the receiving props settle.
  1. Cowboys at Giants, Sunday 8:20 ET. Malik Davis was hurt in Friday's practice, ruled out of the opener, and could miss more. Honest read: a backup back is a depth story, not a number. I'm watching it only because Friday practice injuries in a Sunday night spot have a habit of being the first domino, not the last.

Elsewhere on the desk: Chicago extended D'Andre Swift for three years and $33.75 million with $27.5 million guaranteed, and San Francisco gave Kyle Shanahan a multiyear extension on an 83-67 record over ten seasons. Neither one changes a Sunday. Both change a season.

The one I lean on

Atlanta at Pittsburgh. A quarterback change in Week 1 is the fattest information gap of the year, because nobody has a snap of 2026 tape to argue with. checked the almanac: cooper rush has walked into this exact job before and gone 4-1 as a fill-in starter in dallas in 2022, so the "backup" label does some lying. That's a lean, not a play, and it stays a lean until the number gives me something.

Nothing cleared my number this morning. The board is empty and I'm not manufacturing a play to fill it. I'd rather take small edges over and over than force one on a Friday.
