September baseball has a smell to it. Bullpens are held together with tape and optimism, callups are getting real at-bats in games that matter to somebody else's October, and the market is still pricing a fair number of these names off April reputations. That gap is where I do my living. So here is the honest state of MLB best bets today: one thing on my sheet has real daylight, one is a coin's width from fair, and one is a favorite I would rather fade than back.

Ten games on the board tonight. Four numbers I actually care about.

MLB best bets today: what's on the radar before anything clears

  1. Walker Jenkins Under 0.5 Hits, Yankees at Twins (7:41 PM ET). Offered -104, my fair number -122. The mechanism is the boring kind I like: hits props on young bats get priced off the name and the projected playing time rather than the matchup, and the single most common line in any hitter's game log is the collar. That's roughly 7.8% by my math, the widest thing I've got today. What kills it: the lineup card. A late scratch and the whole conversation is moot.
  2. Giants moneyline at St. Louis (7:46 PM ET). Offered +127 against a fair 126. That is a hair, about a point and a half of edge, the kind of number you file rather than fire. What would turn it into a play: a longer price on the road dog. Get me meaningfully past +130 and this stops being a bookmark.
  3. Dodgers at Cincinnati (6:41 PM ET). Offered -203, my fair -204. Dead flat. That is not a bad spot, it is a non-spot, and the math says pass. I still want eyes on it, because Great American is a small yard and the total is usually the more honest side of that game.
  4. Padres at Colorado (8:41 PM ET). Offered -194 with my fair at -177. The board is charging me about 17 cents for the logo and the altitude, which comes out negative by nearly three points. Fade the price, not the team. Coors has been bending run environments since it opened, and markets still overpay road favorites there when the wind is quiet.

The one I lean on

The Jenkins under, and I want to be precise: a lean, not a play. Here is the work in one sentence. I de-vigged the prop, the under came back near -122, and the board is showing -104, which means the price is paying me about eighteen cents of ground my number thinks it should not be giving away. Small edges over and over, no heroics. That is the whole business.

Everything else stays in the notebook. The Giants price is close enough that I mind the gap like it owes me money, and if it lengthens I will say so out loud.

What I'm watching next: Tuesday's openers, specifically Athletics at Tampa Bay at 6:40 PM ET, because that is where my numbers and the early board tend to disagree most in the last two weeks of a season.

That's the Read, not a tip. This is entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where legal, and your sizing is yours and nobody else's. If you want to argue about the Coors price, you know where to find me.
