First Friday in September, fifteen games, and everybody left in the race is playing like the calendar is chasing them. When I sort MLB best bets today by the size of the gap between my number and the price, the list gets short in a hurry. One real edge. One small one. And a whole lot of games where the market got there before I did.

That is normal for September. The books have watched these bullpens for five months. The soft spots hide in totals, not sides.

What I'm eyeing on the MLB board today

  1. Under 10, Blue Jays at Royals (8:10 PM ET). My number says this total is priced about fourteen cents light. That is the widest gap on my sheet by a distance, and it is the only one I would call a real edge rather than a rounding error. What turns it into a play: the total staying at 10. Take it to 9.5 and most of the value walks out the door with it.
  2. Brewers moneyline at Cincinnati (6:11 PM ET). I make Milwaukee a hair stronger than the price, four cents of it. Four cents is real, it is just not loud. What turns it into a play: nothing changes my read here. It is already a fair grab at the number, just a small one, and Cincinnati is a park that turns fair favorites into nervous ones.
  3. Red Sox at Baltimore (7:06 PM ET). Offered and fair land on the same number. Zero gap. The math says pass, and I am not going to dress up a coin flip as a read.
  4. Twins at White Sox (7:41 PM ET). Word came down this morning that Chicago activated catcher Kyle Teel, out since July with a high ankle sprain. I do not have the lineup card in front of me yet, so this is a watch, not a wager: how they use him, and whether his legs look like July legs.
  5. Cubs at Miami (7:10 PM ET). Chicago is in full playoff-push mode and the coverage all week has treated it that way. Nothing on my board for it. On the radar for the weekend anyway.

The one I lean on most

The Kansas City under. Not a play, a lean, and the difference matters: I want to see the total hold at 10 through first pitch before I do anything with it. Mind the gap like it owes you money, because at fourteen cents it actually does.

checked the almanac: september 4, 1993, jim abbott threw a no-hitter at yankee stadium against cleveland. one arm, twenty-seven outs. some september fridays give you more than a total.

One more thing sitting in the background, and it is not a betting item: the spring training schedule is set for a February 19 start, with the labor situation still unresolved. File it. It will matter in December more than it does tonight.

What I'm watching next: the Toronto and Kansas City total. If it holds at 10, that is the number I care about most all weekend. Everything else on my sheet is a small edge stacked on small edges, no heroics. Keep it entertainment, keep it 21+ where legal, and never bet what would ruin your Saturday. You know where to find me.
