Lane Kiffin is recruiting NFL rookies to come back and play a fifth year of college football, and when it got loud he did the most Kiffin thing available: he pointed at the rest of the profession and said everybody's doing it. Word came down Monday that the LSU coach defended the pursuit as one coach among many working the same phones. Uncomfortable? Sure. Untrue? I doubt it.

Here's why this story matters more than the news blurb makes it look. For a century the eligibility clock was the one thing in college football nobody argued about. You got your years, you used your years, you went pro or you went to work. That clock is now a legal question rather than a bylaw, and once a rule becomes a lawsuit it stops behaving like a rule.
