Connecticut Sun vs Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday night at 7 ET is not a playoff race, and pretending otherwise would insult both teams. It's an 8-25 home team that has gone 2-13 against its own conference hosting a 12-22 Sparks club sitting 7-11 in the West. What it is instead is one of the more honest games on the calendar: two rosters with nothing left to protect and forty minutes to show you who they actually are.
Start with Connecticut, because that 2-13 conference mark is the number that stopped me. You can lose games in this league in a hundred ways, but losing thirteen of fifteen to the teams you see most often, the ones who know your coverages cold by August, is a specific kind of hard. That's not a bad week. That's a season where the margins never once broke your way.
And the almanac keeps a soft spot for this franchise. checked it: the Sun have been to the Finals in 2004, 2005, 2019 and 2022, and have never once raised the trophy. That's four trips, four empty hands, one of the great unfinished stories in the sport. Nobody in Uncasville needs reminding.

It was a strange, poignant weekend in this league anyway, with Phoenix raising Diana Taurasi's No. 3 to the rafters and a career getting the ending it earned. Careers end, seasons end, and some Tuesdays in August exist only to build the next one.
