Friday morning at the desk and the first thing across the wire isn't a lineup card, it's a coaching change in Los Angeles. So let me say the useful thing up top about WNBA best bets today: nothing has cleared my number yet. Not one spot. What follows is the radar, not the ledger.

The Sparks dismissed Lynne Roberts on Friday morning after missing the playoffs in each of her two seasons. Two years, two Octobers spent watching. That's the whole file as it sits, and I'm not going to pretend I know who's next or who was pushing for it inside the building. A coaching search in late September has no number attached to it. It will have one by next spring, and I'll be waiting with the almanac open: Los Angeles has three championships in the trophy case, 2001, 2002 and 2016, and the walk since that last one has been long enough that the franchise clearly decided patience stopped paying.

WNBA best bets today: the spots on my radar

  1. Liberty at Lynx, Friday 8:30 ET. The headline game of the weekend and the one I have the least to say about before tip, because I want to see it rather than guess at it. What turns it into a play: rotation minutes. Who Minnesota trusts in the fourth quarter tells me everything about the second half of this two-game set.
  2. Liberty at Lynx again, Sunday 2:00 ET. Same two rosters, same building, three days apart, early tip. That's the spot I care about most, and it's the one nobody can price properly until Friday's game is in the books. Short turnarounds punish whichever bench got run into the ground first.
  3. Fever at Aces, Sunday 4:00 ET. Las Vegas at home is rarely a soft assignment, which is exactly why I look at these instead of away from them. What would move me: a pace tell, and the injury report landing before the crowd reads it.
  4. Mystics at Dream, Sunday 7:00 ET. Atlanta at home in the early evening window. Nothing here yet beyond a matchup I'd like to see the availability sheet for.
  5. Wings at Valkyries, Sunday 9:00 ET. The late window, West Coast, last game of the day. Historically the least watched and therefore the most likely to carry a soft number if one shows up. I'm not claiming one has.

The one I lean on most

The Sunday matinee in Minnesota. A lean, not a play, and I want that distinction underlined twice. The mechanism is simple: two games in three days between the same two teams, with an early tip on the back end, is the exact spot where bodies and rotations matter more than reputations. If Friday night goes long and heavy on the starters, that's a tell, and I'll say so.

Until then, I'm not manufacturing anything. The math says pass on everything on this radar as of this morning, and small edges over and over beats forcing one.

What I'm watching next: Friday's fourth-quarter minutes in Minnesota, then the Sunday availability sheets across all four games. That's where the weekend actually gets decided. Entertainment with variance, 21+ where legal, and if it ever stops being fun, 1-800-GAMBLER.
