The most consequential story out of Tuesday's WNBA slate isn't the final score. It's the shape of the performance, because Washington's Kiki Iriafen just turned in the kind of game that moves how you think about a team heading into the weekend.
Washington Mystics 79, Toronto Tempo 62: What Actually Happened
The Mystics trailed 32-26 at halftime. Down on the road, against a Toronto team that had Julie Allemand cooking in the first half with nine points and five rebounds, Washington looked like the kind of squad that loses close games. Then they outscored the Tempo 53-30 in the second half. That's not a comeback, that's a statement.
Iriafen was the engine. She finished 9-of-14 from the field, 25 points, 14 rebounds, a double-double that was never really in doubt once she got rolling. Shakira Austin added 17 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks, giving Washington a genuine two-headed frontcourt problem for any team trying to game-plan them. Michaela Onyenwere chipped in 15 points off two three-pointers, and Sonia Citron ran the defense with the kind of composure that turns halftime deficits into routs. The Mystics improve to 12-10 and sit at 8-5 in the Eastern Conference.
That second half is a tell. Washington looked short-handed and slow for twenty minutes, then flipped a switch. Depth and defensive intensity did the work. Portland Fire comes to town Thursday, and this version of the Mystics looks like a team that knows exactly what it is.
Brittney Griner Hits a Milestone
Out of the Connecticut Sun's morning game Tuesday, Brittney Griner poured in 20 points and moved into No. 16 on the WNBA's all-time rebounds list with her 2,602nd career rebound. The Sun earned the win. Griner's longevity and production continue to be one of the genuinely underappreciated stories of this season.
Thursday's Board: Liberty at Dallas, Portland at Washington
Neither of Thursday's games tips until 7:10 PM ET or later, so we've got runway to watch how the market reacts to Tuesday's results before committing to anything. Here's where my attention sits:
New York Liberty (13-11, 8-2 East) at Dallas Wings (16-8, 6-6 West), 9:00 PM ET Thursday. Paige Bueckers is coming off a 22-point showing, and Dallas at 16-8 overall is one of the better records in the league, even if they're only 6-6 against Western Conference competition. New York's conference record, 8-2, is excellent, but that East slate is softer than what Dallas has been navigating. The Liberty are the stronger paper team by record in the East. The Wings have a genuine star in Bueckers who has been putting up numbers that command attention. This is a matchup worth watching closely once the number drops and settles.
Portland Fire (10-14, 3-6 West) at Washington Mystics (12-10, 8-5 East), 7:10 PM ET Thursday. Portland carried a losing record into this stretch and ranks near the bottom of the Western Conference. Washington just ran a 53-30 second half against Toronto. The Mystics have Iriafen fresh off 25 and 14, Austin healthy and active, and home court. Nothing on my board cleared a play this morning, but if a number opens soft on Washington laying moderate chalk, that's a conversation worth having when lines post.

What I'm Watching Next
Today's slate runs three games: Seattle at Chicago (12:10 PM ET), LA Sparks at Minnesota (1:10 PM ET), and Golden State Valkyries at Indiana Fever (8:10 PM ET). No qualifying plays on my board yet for any of them, and I'm not going to manufacture a reason to have one. The overnight wire didn't hand me injury news or line movement that changes the math on today's games, so I'm watching results and tracking how the Washington frontcourt performance gets priced into Thursday's Mystics number.
