Word came down this morning that Cade Cavalli's new deal in Washington carries a $4 million signing bonus shielded against losses from a possible lockout. When September contracts start carrying labor insurance, that's a tell about where the people inside the game think this thing is headed. File it away. We still have baseball to watch tonight.

So here's the honest state of my MLB best bets today: nothing has cleared as a play. Two totals carry real daylight between the offered price and my fair number, a couple of moneylines are close enough to be interesting, and the rest of this board is thinner than a thirteen-game Wednesday should be. That's the sheet, nothing deleted, nothing cherry-picked.

MLB best bets today: the eyeing list

  1. Rays at Yankees, over 6.5 (7:06 ET). Offered at plus money. My fair sits at -111, which means the market is paying me to take a side my own number likes. Seven percent of edge on paper. What turns it into a play: the price staying where it is into first pitch and no late scratch that flips a starter.
  2. Marlins at Cubs, over 6.5 (7:41 ET). The biggest gap on my sheet. Offered -118, my fair is -140. Mind the gap like it owes you money. Same caveat: this one lives or dies on the lineups that actually get posted.
  3. Astros at Mariners, Houston moneyline (10:11 ET). Small edge, about a point and a half, on a Seattle club that has spent the last month getting graded by everyone with a keyboard. A crucial offseason ahead is a real story. It is not a betting reason. The number is the reason, and the number here is thin.
  4. Blue Jays at Orioles, Baltimore moneyline. Offered -113. My fair: -113. Dead even, to the decimal. The math says pass, and I say it out loud so you know I'm not dressing up a coin flip.
  5. Braves and Dodgers as heavy chalk. Atlanta at -245 against my -227, Los Angeles at -203 against my -186. Both are laying more than the price is worth. I'd rather be wrong and cheap than right and overpaying.

The one I lean on

The Bronx total. Getting plus money on a number my sheet makes a modest favorite is the cleanest shape on the board, and shape matters more to me than size this late in a season when nobody's bullpen is honest anymore. A lean, clearly. Not a play until the lineup card confirms it.

Brewers at Phillies is on my screen too, mostly because Philadelphia just got handed a B-minus for a season that felt heavier than that. No number there I love. Sometimes the story and the board don't shake hands.

checked the almanac: september 23, 1908, fred merkle never touched second at the polo grounds, and the cubs walked out of that mess with a pennant. baseball has been arguing about what actually happened ever since.

What I'm watching next: the posted lineups for both overs, and whether the Astros number in Seattle drifts far enough to matter. This is entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where legal, and the sizing is yours, never mine.
