Here is the short version of the Seattle Mariners injury news, and the part that actually touches a ticket: rookie shortstop Colt Emerson is having season-ending surgery Wednesday, and Bryan Woo is making his scheduled start anyway. One of those things costs Seattle a piece of the lineup. The other one is the reason the number did not fall apart.
That order matters. In a late-August game, a rookie infielder coming out of the nine hole moves a run projection by a sliver. A scheduled start from your best arm being confirmed instead of scratched moves it by a lot more. When Woo's name stayed on the card, the biggest downside scenario for Seattle got erased before it ever got priced.
The board, though, went somewhere I did not expect it to go. Philadelphia at Seattle opened with the Phillies at -116 and the Mariners at +102, essentially a coin flip with a nickel of juice. As of 10:33 pm ET the Mariners were showing -576 at DraftKings with the Phillies out at +500, and the prediction venues had Seattle around 82 to 83 percent. The spread flipped from Philadelphia -1.5 +165 to Philadelphia +2.5 +120. The total went from 6.5 to 11.5. Not a tick. A full five runs.
That is not a market reacting to a shortstop's surgery. That is a market resetting around information about who is on the mound, and I am not going to pretend I can see all of it from here. A number that travels that far, that fast, is telling you the opening line was stale or wrong, and my honest read is that the current price has already paid itself out. There is no value left in laying -576 on a team whose news was mostly good. There is no value in +500 just because it is a big number, either. Chasing a five-run total move is how you end up explaining a loss to yourself in the mirror.
What I'm watching before Tuesday's 9:40 pm ET first pitch in Seattle: whether that 11.5 holds through the morning or bleeds back toward the opener. If it holds, the market believes the pitching picture changed and the run environment with it. If it slides two runs, somebody priced it wrong twice.
Nothing cleared my number tonight. Baseball is a long season and this is entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where legal. Sit this one out and wait for the board to tell the truth.
