The Colts officially placed receiver Alec Pierce on injured reserve Saturday with a heel issue, and the number that moved was not the side. It was the total. Indianapolis Colts injury news does not usually cost a game three full points of scoring expectation, but this one did: 45.5 down to 42.5 on Houston at Indianapolis, Sunday at 1:00 pm ET.
The reporting is short and clean. He is on IR, the clock has started, and he rehabs toward a return. IR is not a Wednesday-Thursday-Friday guessing game with a questionable tag attached. It is a multi-week absence by rule. So this is not a game-week subtraction. It is a September-into-October subtraction, and the futures market should treat it that way even if it has not blinked yet.
What Alec Pierce on IR takes away from the Colts offense
Pierce is the vertical element. He is the reason a safety has to honor the top of the route tree, and when that guy is in a boot, everything underneath gets one step tighter. Defenses squeeze. Explosive plays turn into third-and-4. That is a scoring-rate story before it is a win-probability story, which is exactly what the board said.
That is the tell here. The money did not pile onto Houston. The money went straight at the Over.
How the market moved on the Texans-Colts number
| Market | Opened | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Texans moneyline | -150 | -113 (novig) |
| Colts moneyline | +109 | +112 |
| Texans spread | -1.5 -110 | -2 -108 |
| Total | 45.5 | 42.5 |
Two things are happening at once and they look contradictory until you sit with them. The spread moved a half point toward Houston, from -1.5 to -2. Fine, that is the pass-game hit priced honestly. But the Houston moneyline went from -150 all the way back to -113, which reads like a Colts endorsement and is not one. A -150 price next to a -1.5 spread never made sense. Those two numbers were not speaking to each other. The drift to -113 is mostly the moneyline catching up to the spread it was always supposed to match. Call it housekeeping, not a signal.
The prediction venues sit at 56 percent Houston on Kalshi and 53 on Polymarket, against roughly 53 percent implied in the de-vigged moneyline. Kalshi is the outlier and it is a small one.
The honest caveat before anyone falls in love with the Under
Three points off a total is a lot of freight for one receiver to carry. In my experience a single skill-position IR move is worth a point, maybe a point and a half on a total when he is the explosive guy. So either the market is over-correcting, or there is something else in that move I cannot see from here: weather at kickoff, another body on the inactive list, sharp money that got there before the news did. I do not have the full Sunday inactive sheet in front of me yet, and pretending otherwise would be a lie dressed as analysis.
Which means the live question is not whether the Over was right at 45.5. It is whether 42.5 has gone one number too far. Mind the gap like it owes you money, because a total that travels through 45, 44 and 43 in an afternoon is a total that occasionally bounces back a half point by morning.
What I'm watching next
The Sunday morning inactive report, first. If Pierce is the only meaningful name, 42.5 is stretched and the Over at a short price becomes a real conversation. If a second pass-game piece shows up on that list, the market was early and correct and I tip my cap. I am also watching whether the Colts number in the AFC South futures market gets touched at all, because a multi-week absence for your field-stretcher should be worth something there and so far nobody has moved.
Nothing cleared my number this morning at 42.5. That is a fine place to end up. Bet what you would be comfortable losing on a Sunday afternoon, 21+ where legal, and if it ever stops being entertainment, 1-800-GAMBLER is there.
