The Seattle Seahawks injury news for the opener against New England has teeth. Safety Nick Emmanwori, working his way back from ankle surgery, has been ruled out, and with Ty Okada already down, the Seahawks go into the first game of the season two bodies light in the back end. The board noticed. New England moved from +163 to +150 on the moneyline, and the spread walked from Patriots +4 all the way down to +3.
That is not a shrug. That is money.
What moved on Seahawks vs Patriots
| Market | Opened | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Patriots ML | +163 | +150 (betus) |
| Seahawks ML | -190 | -145 (betmgm) |
| Patriots spread | +4 -115 | +3 +100 (bovada) |
| Seahawks spread | -3.5 -114 | -3.5 +107 (williamhill_us) |
| Total | 44.5 -115 / -112 | 42.5 -102 over, 41.5 -107 under |
Two things there matter more than the rest. First, the dog went from +4 to +3, which in this sport is not a point of movement, it is a change of address. Four and three are different neighborhoods, and a Patriots backer who waited paid for the wait. Second, look at the juice on the 3.5. It opened at -114 and now sits at +107. A book offering plus money on a favorite laying 3.5 is a book waving both arms at Seattle support. That's a tell.
The prediction venues are sitting around 38 percent on New England, which lines up neatly with the +150 side of the current market. No divergence to mine there.
The part that does not add up
Here is what has my attention. The total came down. Not a tick, a fall: 44.5 at the open, 42.5 at the top book on the over, 41.5 on the under elsewhere. That is two to three full points off a season opener.
A defense missing two safeties is supposed to push a total the other way. Fewer trusted bodies in the deep third usually means more explosives, more chunk plays over the middle, more points. Instead the money bet the game down while the news said the opposite. Which means whatever moved that total was not the safety room: game script, conditions, both defenses generally, or something on the New England side of the injury sheet I do not have in front of me. I am not going to invent a reason for a three-point move. I am going to note that the total and the news are pulling opposite directions, and that gaps like that are where the honest work lives. Mind the gap like it owes you money.
checked the almanac: the last time seattle opened a year without a safety they leaned on, kam chancellor's holdout in 2015, they dropped the first two games. one data point, not a system, but the position matters more here than the depth chart suggests.
What I'm watching next
The Khosla family inherits a Super Bowl roster and, per the reporting out of Seattle, plans to leave the football people alone. Fine by me. The football problem in front of them is smaller and more specific: who plays the deep half, and for how long.
Three things I am tracking from here.
Emmanwori's timeline. Ankle surgery recoveries rarely resolve in a week, and if he is trending toward missing multiple games, that is a live input on Seattle's Week 2 spread and total before the market has fully absorbed it.
Whether the total stays down. If it settles near 42 and the game plays over on the back of secondary breakdowns, the market will overcorrect on Seattle's next number, and overcorrections are where I make my living. Small edges over and over, no heroics.
Whether New England's price keeps drifting. A dog moving from +163 to +150 on injury news is a normal reaction. A dog that keeps climbing is a different story.
As always: this is entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where it is legal, and the number that matters is the one you can live with. 1-800-GAMBLER if it stops being fun.
